OUGD503- Final Crit Workshop

Collaborative Feedback

For the first part of the crit we the class gave feedback on our collaborative work.

Common feedback we received was that our crafting skills were to a high standard. This was nice to hear because of the time that went into producing the posters. A few comments mentioned they didn't understand the concept which is fair but the boards were made for DNAD submission which didn't need it on so its a fair comment for college submission and I will take this in to consideration when design the individual boards.

Individual Work

In regards to my own work, the boards that were crited are not the final boards I will hand in. They need refining and some re-designing to make them clear and precise. I will address this when I have finished my other briefs.

Project Report- things to think about

Effective layout of boards and presentation
Consistency

Project management:
how do you evidence it?
have you evidenced it?
is there enough evidence for the time available?

Have you answered the brief? If not why?

Visual quality
Technical ability
Suggestions for improvement (and why?)
Evaluation of work- what works/what doesn't and why?

OUGD505- Studio Brief 2- Brief Workshop

In the workshop we had to breakdown the brief by outlining different things relating to the subject, the processes i want to try, possible products to produce and the target audience.

Once I had done this I have written my first draft of the brief. This has helped me to gain a better understanding of what I need to achieve and how to go about it.

Typography Workshop2

What is Type?

Type is a visual representation of spoken language.

Kerning

Kerning is the space between each letters

Correct kerning is equally spaced between each letter

Never negative kern!!!

leave the biggest space at 0% and adjust the rest accordingly

The top word hasn't had any kerning and the biggest space is between the 'E' and the 'S'

I had to adjust between the 'M' and 'E' by 20

 'A' and 'M' by 20

 'J' and 'A' by 10

I was surprised by how much of a subtle change made such a distance.
To break a sentence you need to separate the lines where the pause would be when spoken

Hierarchy is really import in presenting information

We had to use the words to spell the numbers to make it readable from the bottom to the top reading 1 2 3 4

It was discussed that different things can be used to help with hierarchy such as weigh, point size, composition....

Next we had to make it read 4321 in what ever layout we felt would best communicate this.

there is ad difference between looking and reading

the brain goes for the easiest option first but doesn't always read it.

layout gives order of information. Using words at different orientations forces the brain to read the words in a specific order.
Body Copy

Low x-height gives the appearance of more leading

10 to 12 words maximum line length. This allows the eye to easier follow the leading when moving onto the next line.

four columns used for newspapers
Three for magazine
Two best for reading purposes
one used for novels

Use indents instead of line space to create more space

Can use justify when each line has 10/12 words per line, becomes almost unnoticeable.

The minimum number of words that can be used per line is 6

When working with type it helps to speak out the text to help you to think about how to intelligently use type appropriately.

OUGD503- Collaborative Workshop4

Design Boards
.

Feedback Forms

Recurring comments that we received from the feedback was to make the first board higher impact and this will make our concept clearer. We could do with trimming the boards down to three or four boards to communicate the protect in a more precise way. We need to put our names on the boards and number them. We need to communicate the deliverables better, maybe through imagery rather than text. Also make the audience clearer.

I think the feedback we received was fair and we have a lot to improve on in regards to the final boards. We will obviously allocate more time to the final boards to make sure they reflect the work as best as possible.

Common errors within the class
-Alignment
-Explanation/Clarification
-Quality of images
-Type setting- spacing/margins/gutters
-Choice of language

Improvements to consider
-Consistency of layout
-Defining Audience- Aims and Outcomes?
-Too much information
-IMPACT- hierarchy of information

Things we need to improve/consider
-impact board- choose the most successful poster and use close up imagery focussing on the quilling.
-3 boards- Impact/concept/Campaign poster/Other channels
-high quality images

Project Report

Pdf format
On blog and on disk

-Introduction
-why chose it
-what did with it
-evaluation- what worked/didnt work
-overall evaluation

sense of what Ive learnt with each brief
Last post on blog for the module.
only include resolved briefs

OUGD505- Build a Brand- Task4

Initial Ideas

The company we had to brand was waste removal. We started by thinking about what kind of waste there is.

We decided to focus the company on festival waste, maintaining and cleaning up afterwards.

Next we started thinking about the audience and what services we would be offering. We decided that the company ethos would be environmentally friendly and look at replenishing the land after the event. This will be the selling point for the business.

Next we started thinking about names. We wanted it to be simple and straight to the point to reflect the efficiency of the services we will be offering. We decided on RESTORE. for the final name. Its straight to the point, communicates what we do and is east to remember.

For the aesthetic of the logo we discussed having it just type or having a symbol as well. I think we are going to keep it typographic with colour for simplicity. We decided this because it looks more corporate and communicates to the businesses running the events rather than festival goers.

Logo Development

To start we tried a few different fonts to see what worked best.

 Typeface

The font we decided to use is Archivo Black.

We started thinking about introducing colour. We want to use green as the dominant colour to reflect the green ideology of the company and sustainability.

We couldn't decide what green to use so we tried a few variations to see what worked best. We all liked the third row down, third in. The green is more of a grassy colour.

For consistency I girded out the logo with a 5mm area for the type to sit in.

Final Logo and Colour Variations

The colour scheme we have decided on is white, black and green. The logos will use these colours for the variations for different media.

Mock-ups

We have made some mock-ups with the logo in use to show how it can be applied across different medias.
